fluoridated or non fluoridated toothpaste?

 19 months old this month!
2 months back i brought little Matty to the dentist.
he has early infant caries. sigh

so being the paranoid mum, i quickly text the cousin in australia to buy home some toothpaste for the boys.

check out the Maclean Milk Teeth toothpaste! for 0-3 years old.

in fact, babies should and can use fluoridated toothpaste.

when i told the dentist that i have been purchasing non-fluoridated toothpaste for my babies, she was astounded! she doesnt know there exist such toothpaste!

even if the babies/tot cant spit, they can still use the non-fluoridated toothpaste. the amount will not cause fluorosis.
my bad, i havent been reading on it. i made the decision to purchase non-fluoridated by just listening to other mums' suggestion.

why do i need to get these toothpaste across the ocean?
because i do not like the idea of buying Coca-cola flavoured toothpaste. or any fruity funny flavours for my children.
i prefer toothpaste to be mint.

and i want them to be able to transit easily to adult toothpaste in future.

Matty is ok with Mint.

before the árrival' of these toothpaste from Au, i asked the babysitter to apply very very very ultra thin layer of adult toothpaste for him.
initially it was spicy for him, but after a few times, he got used to it. good boy! :)

kind-hearted cousin bought so many tubes! i think it could last them the entire childhood! serious!

KJ is now using adult Colgate- 24 hours. because our favourite paeds dentist recommended it. she claimed that that is the only toothpaste so far which is quoted in papers.

fast forward. he had his dental appointment again early this month. this time he says This is for girl - referring to the pink spectacles.

the kind dentist replied Oh boy can also wear pink.

and he talks throughout the procedure.

before his number was called into the room, he says Mommy im happy to see you.
darn, he just knows how to hit the happy button huh?
and i think i was beaming like a lunatic, he said it over and over. -_______-

then he says Mommy i want to sit on your lap.

i was like O.O. where did he learn the word lap.

then i found out today. he learned it in school from Ms yong. ms yong asked him to sit on her lap. ahhh, mystery solved.

there were a couple of things such as Complex words.

he utters complex words and we were like WOW, he learned that in school? no doubt i was impressed, and shot a look at his dad.

then one day his dad came home and disclose " honey you'll be sad to discover this. he learned complex words through Leapfrog."

oh well. whatever. i was the one buying Leapfrog for him anyway :p

he could also read the numbers on the ticket. zero four zero five. not a new discovery. ive already knew he could read 0 to 10.

this morning he woke up suggesting to stay home. he says this is school. im not sure if we were on the same wavelength but i'd like to think of it as play school? this makes me happy.

yesterday morning he said he wanted to go to aunty's house. why i questioned. i dont want to go to school because the teacher will scold me he responded.

coming back to his teeth, he is having more dental caries. definitely brings down my mood.

hence he is now in the high-risk group since they found a new cavity. he will still be in this group if each time he comes for review and there are new cavity found. appointment will be every 2-3 monthly.

Dr Su advised to switch to fluoridated toothpaste.

the adults at home are using Darlie and one Houseman used to share with us that her professor from UMS says colgate is better.

when i brought up this issue with Dr su, she says she is not aware. but she did came across papers supporting the use of Colgate 12hour.

she says that kj should be using adult toothpaste now. they have higher flouride. how many ppm. since he is having new caries, the unfluoridated toothpaste is not sufficient. as long as he does not ingest the toothpaste, even if he does, in a year he wouldn not get fluoresis. 

anyway, im not worried because kj can spit and gargle very well. his dad even allows him to gargle his mouth with antiseptic mouth wash. (when his breathe smells terribly bad)

nothing much gets to be done during this dental visit. she only managed to fill 1 deep cavity and another hideous going-to-be-cavity. all are molars.

this afternoon he got cranky, asked me to bathe so that we can go out. he ended up sleeping in his father's arms.

these days,
if it is me tucking him into bed, he would want to be nursed.
if it is his father, he would request for the father to walk fast fast.

the father would need to walk around the house, carrying him in the above position until he falls asleep.

children are just cute, aren't they?

for the past few months, he hasn't been waking up regularly for midnight feeds. once in a while, if he wakes up and asks for milk, i'll give him my breast.

as for my breastfeeding journey, it is coming to an end, albeit slowly. the breasts have shrunk, either to its original size or smaller? haha.

i am not completely ready to give it all up yet. hence, whenever he wants my milk, i'll give.

i have long kept my electric Aveda breast pump into its box.

as for his teeth, we have missed the previous dental appointment with Dr. Yani hence the next one will be on the 12th . when we last saw her, she told us that she has managed to book a spot for KJ to do filling under anesthesia. i could accept it until she shared something that caught my throat. she said if its her own child, she wouldn't want her child to go through anesthesia. gasp! how?
given a chance i wouldnt want KJ to go through unnecessary medical-stress, mostly in my part.

few months back we make it a point to brush his teeth every night before bed. we can't be lazy/irresponsible and bank on babysitter to do it.
i think she only brushes the crown, that was what i observed a year ago. i would sometimes randomly go to her house and watch how she does certain things. :p
i am not spying, i merely want to observe and sometimes learn. anyhow, she is a veteran.

we have also been using adult's Darlie on KJ.

well, few days ago, hubs announced that we should not give KJ milk after he has brushed his teeth.

i am now thinking if we can maintain the condition of his teeth and we religiously bring him for dental check-up until he is ready to go though the procedure without NS. possible? the dentist said 4 years old. will a 4 - year-old kid be willing to be seated on a chair and opens his mouth wide for a period of time?

i thought i would diligently wipe his teeth every night before he goes to bed.

but did i ask KJ if he wants to do it?

he'd cry out loud! very sympathetically.

he's a child who hardly cries, so whenever he cries,

it'll be arrows shooting right through our heart.

hb would nail him to the bed while i'd quickly mop around the teeth

so the wipes become a white elephant after that. (i bought it Sept 2011)

i shall try to sell it off.

no point keeping since i won't be able to bake a baby in time :p

i would want to buy again though for my next baby.

my memory has failed me on how i came about to know about this wipe but after knowing about it, i was keen to try because kJ's teeth was yellow at the upper crown - near the gums.

brought him to the dentist when he was about 1 year old.

many people commented that i do now have to worry because they will have new sets of teeth later on.

how wrong they were!!

u need to keep them (the baby teeth) sparkling clean despite them dropping off to make way for permanent teeth.

in continuation of my story,

the dentist saw him and said he couldn't do much.

considering his age and the condition (there was a very tiny weeny whole in between his teeth),

he told me to practice good oral hygiene and to maintain the size of the hole.

not sure if the yellowish stain is caries or something else.

forgot to confirm with the dentist.

he gave a 6/12 appointment.

feb this year was the second appointment.

we saw Dr. Yani, a specialist pead's dentist i was told.

omg!

i don't know how to describe how much i love her!

she was excellent in dealing with kj that day!

she could talk non-stop,

not to me but to kj :p

by doing so, she got his attention and managed to make him open his mouth and display his teeth,

even if it was for a wee seconds.

kj allowed her to brush his teeth both top and bottom using their electronic brush.

then she applied a gooey paste of fluoride, yellow in color.

can't drink water for 30 mins after that.

I'm so proud of u little boy!

the other time he cried so loud when we try to yank open his mouth!

so the dr only managed / dared to apply the fluoride paste.

well, dr yani told us to go back every 3-4 months to get kj accustomed to them,

so that by age 4 or so, they can do the necessary if needed.

it is not worth while to anesthetize him now in order to carry out dental procedure.

above age 2,

toddlers can use fluoridated tooth paste!

he is now still using non-flouridated expensive toothpaste. i'll share more about that next time.

off i go to do some homework - to find out which toothpaste is good for him :p
