waldorf : kampung boy

6 Aug 2013
watching my dad bathing the pigeons.

he learned the word "pet"
his pet is Hero, my family's black Rottweiler.
my dad's pet is pigeon. -_____-
i hate the birds.

 the orchard.
my dad, very very old school and conventional.
he loves orchards.
this is his new orchard.

 buah longkong.
no idea what is it called in english.

i was in my confinement so i was confined at home and the little boy enjoys going to the orchard, without me.
hence i have no idea what he does.

now that we are back in KK, he saw a brownish round shell on the floor and he muttered longkong.
he picked up words really fast now.
i was impressed he can remember that fruit. hehe

 picking rambutans.
he wants a RED one.

 pulling the rambutan.

years ago, i remembered he was afraid of touching the rambutan.
maybe he did not like the hairy feel.

 organic durian

 played on the swing

 the father practices surfing.

 fresh water from the mountain.
believe me, it was refreshing and tasty!

 dad went to shoot petai.
organic petai.

these days everyone talks about organic this, organic that.

whilst we enjoy, where does the little one go?
there were too many mosquitoes waiting to feast on fresh blood, so matty hid here.

 isnt this mosquito net funny?
imagine lifting up the net and u can feast on the dish!
haha!

barely 2 months old, we bring him everywhere.
including the orchard in the kampung.
is he lucky or unlucky?
luckily no insect bites!

the cheeky boy loves the chicken!
i hope he did not torture them!

see? he picked up the chicken!
*gasp*
even i dare not touch them!
haha
lousy squeamish mama

 a real silly boy
what's in his hand can u guess?
a small chick!

 chill baby chill...
dont get over-excited!

he tried to kiss the chick
-__________-
i think he did kiss?
oh no!
and he asked me to take a photo of him kissing.
i was antsy so i got a little clumsy.
i want to quickly snap and get it done with so that he would release the fragile chick.

at night for dinner,
we had musang king, from Bentong.
this box costs over 200 ringgit.

some people said there are fake musang king.
one of the many ways to identify is that musang king has wrinkled skin.

2 months after confinement, i dare not went overboard.
just a few seeds to seal the craving.

some said durians can be eaten during confinement because it is heaty.
some said angin.

i dont know.
:S

i waited till after confinement.

check my title.
i mentioned waldorf.
what is waldorf?
it is a type of childhood education.
just like montessori, which everyone has heard of.

waldorf has to malaysia and hence people are becoming more aware of.

it originates from Germany.

While getting the links, i found some info which is in line with my parenting philosophy but ive greatly LOST the battle! :(

A cornerstone in Steiner’s educational theorems was the fact that children go through three stages in their lives. First, from age 0-7, the spirit inhabiting the body of the child is still getting used to its surroundings. This explains many standards in the Waldorf curriculum such as the standard of teaching the alphabet at age 7 or 8. During the second stage, from ages 7-14, the child is said to be driven by imagination and fantasy, and during the third stage, starting at age 14, the astral body is said to be driven into the physical body, creating the onset of puberty. - See more at: http://earthschooling.info/thebearthinstitute/?p=1872#sthash.OOu1uAq6.dpuf

Modern researchers, however, have just recently made this connection when they recently announced, “Watching Television may Quicken the Onset of Puberty” (Dr. Laura Markham, 2006). In her article, based on 35 different research studies she states that this connection has a lot to do with the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, which plays a key role in regulating the body’s internal clock. Light emitted by television screens suppresses melatonin levels in the blood, which disrupts sleep patterns of children and teens as well as the age at which they enter puberty. It is also interesting to note that the problems of early-onset puberty have baffled researchers since 1950. This was the same date in which televisions became widely owned in the United States.
This is not the main reason given when Waldorf Schools state on their websites that children should not watch television. When I reviewed 40 Waldorf school websites I found that 36 of them stated their main reason for discouraging television was that it hinders the imagination in the child.

My children on car seat

high back booster.
CS906F. Goodbaby brand.
bought during a members day sale. RM 160. best deal we think.

what is a booster seat?
why did i buy a booster seat?

Keep children in booster seats until they pass the "5 Step Test" (usually around 10-12 years old and close to 5 feet tall) in every vehicle in which the child rides. If the child meets the 5 Step Test in one vehicle, but not another, the child will need a booster for every vehicle in which the 5 Step Test is not met.

The 5 Step Test

If you answer "No" to any of these questions, your child must be in a booster seat:
1. Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat?
2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?
3. Is the lap belt touching the top of the thighs, not the tummy?
4. Is the shoulder belt centered on the shoulder and chest?
5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?
BELT-POSITIONING BOOSTERS CAN NOT be used with only a lap belt!
(See your car dealer for a lap/shoulder belt retrofit.)

taken from car-seat.org

aldo car seat. RM 299

guys, u can buy this aldo for less than RM299 in the west.

everything is over-priced here. sobs

so this aldo seat is passed down to the little brother while the big bro gets a brand new blue booster.
thats the perk of being the eldest. everything new. heh.

this orange Aprica, is the most expensive car seat that we owned.

it is so huge and bulky that we keep it in the west.
we usually need to travel 400 - 500km on average each trip home.

yikes! the baby sleeps on makeshift bed.

i have no idea what I'm gonna do.

well, trust me.
safety aside, a child can sit and sleep comfortably in a carseat THAN our car's original seat.

we are a family who loves to travel and being located in East malaysia,
we go on road trips, despite having a baby or a toddler.

whether or not they buckle up, is not my main concern.
sorry, because I'm merely lazy having to scutter over to his side to buckle and unbuckle.
KK is so small i find it silly trying to buckle and unbuckle every 10 mins.

but as long as they stick their butt on their designated seat, I'm fine.

why is my child always sick?

in the airport

the dad decided that he has to wear mask each time he flies

hello kitty mask bought in daiso.
a packet of 2. means RM2.50 each.
oh dear! pricey

yes, everyone is amused that he wants to even put on the mask

yeh, he put it on for 30mins, till we got up to the plane.
we had to coax him from time to time.
besides, the father himself also wears a mask.
leading by example?
uh, the father also always gets the bugs on plane.
-_________-
so we're killing 2 birds with a stone
;)

after flying frequently for 3 years,
we came to realize that each time he flies, he'll be the victim to illness.

prior to that, i have always thought that he is a healthy and strong kid.
hardly ever falls sick.

except when we travel, he'll catch the flu and cough bugs inside the plane. darn.

also, his hygiene is awful.

constrained in the cabin,
his hand touches everywhere followed by scratching and wiping his face and whatnot.

nevertheless, we only treat the symptoms usually.

he rarely falls ill and becomes inactive.
he is usually ill and very active.
whenever a kid is active, they are fine.
remember to only treat symptomatically.

read this article.
parents, relax.

children are prone to illness when they begin school.
however, my child builds his immunity even before he attends school.

so parent, do relax.

he was never on antibiotic till today.
just once, we were not sure if it was bacterial, we gave him syrup amoxicillin for 2 dose and we stopped.
most of the time they were due to viral infection.

dont ask me how to diagnose.
even a doctor cannot be 100% sure.

but yeah, generally, antibiotic doesnt help viral infection.
and most of his illnesses were due to damn viruses.

now that he has started school,
there will be other bouts of flu.

im rolling up my sleeve.....

dosage of green smoothies

kangkung, tomato, passion fruit, guava and frozen banana

guava is anticancer fruit?
i dont know, havent done any reading on this but since they mentioned, i began to buy them when i see it.

kj's current dose of green smoothies

previously he takes the bottle on the right.

after my confinement, i was back with a vengeance.
i increase his dose to the bottle on the left.
ive tested it.it was 3x more.
i didnt check the mls though.

note: please refrigerate on the bottle.

he doesnt usually drink fresh.

i AM the one drinking immediately since i am the one blending.

i will pass his portion to aunty and he'll drink in the late afternoon. otherwise, it must be refrigerated.

but last friday morning, kj had diarrhoea.
im not sure if it is due to the green juice or vco.
vco has laxative effect. i'll speak more about this next time.

he had extremely watery stools at home. they were yellow in colour.
i did not suspect anything.
when we went out, he had another round of green watery mucus.
that got me worried.
they were not smelly at all.

guess i should reduce his dose and further observe.
we have started drinking green smoothies for 3 months so this episode happens now.
wonder what was the cause.

EDIT: 10/9/13 : i found a source which tells us how much juice to give to children. so yeah, i think i might have overload him. but because im not juicing, I'm giving him smoothies, which does not have as much nutrients per se. anyhow, i'll tone down. just a few sips of what we're drinking will do.

 beetroot, carrot, lemon.
i sieved the smoothies.
so this is JUICE!
i dont own a juicer yet

this recipe is for his eczema - to reduce inflammation.

 passion fruit

wait till they wrinkled up then cut them into half and scoop the flesh!
yum! i love them.

 example of Kailan
this kailan is a bit special.
it is smallish in size and i love the entire plant, with its root.
i rarely see this in the market. this is not the common kailan that we see, with fatter stalks.

everyone talks about KALE.
but kale is imported. not grown in malaysia.

there are people who managed to grow them in their garden here in malaysia.
u can also buy them in BIG supermarket but they are exorbitant.

so the next best thing to kale is kailan!

a bunch of kailan at the bottom, organic banana, sunflower seeds, green apple, orange, frozen coconut milk

for beginners:
u do not need to follow my smoothies to a tee.
just play around with the veg and fruits with some little imagination.
what fruits are sweet, which is sour and things like that.

banana is a versatile sweetener.
so always keep them in hands.

sometimes they sell a big bunch for RM1 when they are over-riped.
i dont mind.
buy them and freeze!
in fact i always look for such deals ;)

Vegetables that can be consumed raw: kailan, sawi, bok choy, red cabbage, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, wheatgrass (only for juicing), turnip/jicama/sengkuang, beetroot, water chestnut, yakon, carrot, lettuce, spinach, sweet potato leaves, kangkung, herbs (mint, basil, parsley, cilantro, ulam raja....)

all the ulams can be blended/juiced.

fresh salmon for omega

FRESH SALMON!

bought one whole fish of 4.75kg.
paid RM218.50!

 one slab for lunch today

can even eat as sashimi!

 big mistake.
i thought we were going to pan fry or grill so i asked him to cut this way.
argh.
next time i should ask him to fillet (i think most people fillet since he asked if i want to fillet the fish).

they cut so thick! i had difficulty slicing this slab into 3.
got stuck at the middle bone.

next time, we can de-skin the fish and deep dry it!
oh man! DELICIOUS!!
like keropok, i hope kj would eat it!
all the healthy fats!
alpha omega 3 and what not!

i was told salmon has alpha omega and flaxseed has gamma.
so kj needs all the fatty acids!

and get the bones for bone broth!

i can already imagine all the goodness from the entire fish!

lazy to take out the grill pan.
so just pan fry on tefal pan.

seasoned with salt and pepper.

i ordered for a medium done!
gah.
chef insisted it was MEDIUM.
-_____-
looks entirely cooked to me.
hehe

anyway, the skin was yummmmmy! although not crunchy like those u get in japanese restaurants, it does not have any fishy taste at all!!!
it was creaaaamy!

well, i freeze the rest.
what to do?
:)

if it wasnt for KJ, we wouldnt get to eat this!
we tumpang-ed !
:D

extra reading:

Is farm-raised salmon as healthy as wild?

edition 8/9/13:

i defrost another bigger slab this morning.
just placed it on a plate on the kitchen counter.
after a few hours, the entire slab was soft.
chef cooked it medium done and they were fabulous!

correction: i should mentioned i bought CHILLED salmon, instead of fresh salmon. to clear some confusion.

MC from school

yesterday after school he got all moody and cranky in the car.

he wants to go back to school so that he can drink from the water dispenser.

"you turn back. i want to drink teacher's water"

u want to drink from the water dispenser? we'll go early tomorrow and u can drink then ok?

Nooo!!...

and the entire conversation goes in a circle.

today is friday!
yeah and he skipped school.

he wears a mask!
so that freaked the teacher.
*like this. this was taken early this year in the airport*

mask bought in Daiso the curse. RM5 for only 2 masks. ouch.

well the teacher didnt know.
she was amused, commenting that kj actually wants to wear a mask.
"so he is okay with it"

i said oh he is sick..
before i could finish the sentence, she says no no..he cant come to school etc

darn.
the little kid was eager to go to school!

so mrs henry gave her a little star, chopped on his hand because he still wants to go to school despite being ill.

the boy was a little reluctant....but what to do?

anyway blessing in disguise.

i drove straight to buy salmon fish and when we were there in the outlet,
he actually poo-ed in his pants!
watery greenish mucus. not smelly at all.
wonder if it could be due to my juice?
detoxification?
the mucus worries me..

in the morning before 7am, he had watery diarrhea and they were yellow.
stomach churn i think so he said tummy ache.
poor chap.
i did not suspect the juice till the green mucus later on.

oh now they say could be due to VCO for its detoxifying effect.
i did up his vco dosage because he is down with flu. very mild.
must be from that little kid in class.
hehe.

wonder why mrs henry didnt send them home :p

Spinach Fritatta

 simplest meal ever!
and nutritious!

  • fry onions with tomatoes. set aside.
  • throw spinach into pan and stir fry till they wilt and become soft.
  • beat 5 eggs in a bowl. add some salt and pepper.
  • add some milk into beaten egg
  • mix in the tomatoes and spinach into the egg
  • pour them into a baking mould and BAKE!
  • 180 celcius, 20 mins
i dont have accurate measurements because i cook this way. everything is agak-agak.

adapted from bbc good food.

most importantly,
my fussy son loves it!
